World Wrestling Entertainment
Another year starts and the WWE
is pushing its luck with the censors once again. On the first WWE broadcast of
the year (Smackdown, 01.02.03) Dawn Marie "got married" to Al Wilson (Tori
Wilson's father), while both were only wearing underwear. Although this love and
sex storyline is stupid, no can deny that Dawn Marie only wearing underwear is
good for ratings. I only have one complaint and most people would agree with me.
We didn't have to see Al Wilson (if that is his real name) only wearing
underwear. On Smackdown of 01.09.03, Al Wilson allegedly died of a heart attack.
On Smackdown of 01.16.03, Al Wilson has his open casket wake. If this is another
WWE storyline, it is sick, plain and simple.
I am fed up with Kurt Angle
and his goons, Team Angle. He will face Chris Benoit on the Royal Rumble PPV. I
hope Benoit beats Angle and finally gets the world title (at least one of them).
With the purchase of WCW, WWE
changed part of the WCW history. WWE recognizes Benoit as a former WCW
heavyweight champion. WCW at the time made excuses not to hand Benoit the title.
Benoit left WCW for that reason.
Originally four wrestlers
left WCW
at the same time for the WWF (now WWE). They were Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko,
Perry Saturn and Eddy Guerrero. Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero are still in
WWE. Where is Malenko? At least, there are news about Saturn. Sources indicate
that Perry Saturn was released from WWE and is now in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Why doesn't Paul
"Big Show" Wight doesn't fight Angle for the title and put their
alliance aside? If the Big Show wins the tile, he could fight Nash. All this
fantasy is for nothing. Nash is hurt or taking a break, but it would be a cool
comeback.
Speaking of cool returns,
where are Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Sting, Lex Luger, the rest of the wrestlers
that made WCW cool who were not picked by the WWE? Some are in Total Non-Stop
Action like Konnan.
RAW started the year
(01.06.03) in a low, low key. The Dudleys were beat by 3 Minute Warning, Ric
Flair, Batista, Eric Bishoff, Sean Morley, Regal and Storm. Do we need Bischoff
to show off his so-called power. What in the hell was Vince McMahon thinking? At
least, RAW finished with a phone call indicating that Vince McMahon was
returning to RAW the following Monday (01.13.03).
The first Smackdown of 2003
had footage of Dawn Marie and Al Wilson's alleged honeymoon. By the end of the
show, Al had suffered a heart attack.
The highlight of Samckdown
(01.09.03) was a fight between Brock Lesner and Albert (now A-Train). Lesner
finally Lesner had a real fight.
WWE celebrates 10 years of
RAW (01.14.03). That means live action on Monday with Vince McMahon (01.13.02),
live celebration on Tuesday and taped footage for Smackdown (01.06.03). Maybe
the excitement of the celebration and the return of Vince McMahon have brought
some new wind to a worldwide promotion that is showing its age and getting
boring again.
Eric Bischoff has brought as
much new wind as Shane McMahon's alleged purchase of WCW or the Alliance (WCW
and ECW) against WWF gimmick about a year ago. We (as fans) need another
promotion besides WWE (how about NWA-TNA?). The WWE needs competition to drop
all stupid gimmicks and be the same promotion that dared to invite ECW to RAW
and that survived the Monday night war.
On RAW (01.13.02) Vince
McMahon put Eric Bischoff in his place. McMahon threatened to fire Bischoff if
he didn't "turn around" RAW within 30 days.
Right now there are so many
talented wrestlers in the WWE that some of them can't shine as they did in WCW
or ECW. For example, Mike Awesome was the world champion in ECW. He went to WCW
around the time that Time Warner
put the promotion for sale. He was in the WWF for a couple of months. He won
the WWF Hardcore tile and disappeared right after the Alliance gimmick was
dropped.
On the Tenth Anniversary of
RAW, Cold was declared the wrestler of the decade. He was also part of the
favorite moment of RAW (when he drove a beer to the ring). There seems to be a
lot of bad blood still between the WWE and Stone Cold. Steve Austin didn't come
out to get his award. Instead Vince McMahon came out and emphasized that Stone
Cold was not invited to the award presentation. Right after this charade, Triple
H and Flair left the ceremony upset (as if they wanted to see Austin). Let's
just hope Stone Cold returns to the promotion.
Speaking of bad blood, Trish
Stratus was chosen the favorite female. The WWE might have been
"played" with the numbers, so the other female wrestlers would get
this recognition.
Smackdown (01.16.03) had an
ECW flashback. Tajiri and Muzio (Little Guido in ECW) had a classic ECW-style
fight, fast and aggressive, but short). Munzio won the fight thanks to the
interference.
At the Royal Rumble
(01.19.03), the Dudleys won the tag team titles for the 16th time, from Steven
Regal and Lance Storm. The next night Sean Morley made this whole stupid charade
to have Regal and Storm steal the title again. What in the hell is Morley doing
in the WWE?
Brock Lesner won the Royal
Rumble (01.19.03). He will face Angle and hopefully beat the crap out off him.
Angle is still the Smackdown champion after a brutal fight with Benoit.
Just as some wrestling
websites had predicted, Bischoff is trying to get Austin back to the WWE. He
invited Austin to return on the next PPV, No Way Out.
As of 01.22.03 Raven and
Justin Credible (real name: Peter Polaco) have been released from the WWE. Raven
has gone to NWA-TNA. Just like the good old days of the WWF and WCW wars,
wrestlers are jumping back and forth form promotion to promotion.
WWE has signed Hulk Hogan
again. Stephanie McMahon welcomed back Hogan (aired 01.24.03). To add more
excitement to Hogan's return, Vince McMahon interrupted Hogan's comeback
insulting him. Hogan asked McMahon to face him at No Way Out. How boring and
silly is wrestling getting? WWE, the biggest promotion in the world nowadays,
needs a wrestler that was big in the 1980's but rather lame in the 1990's (in
WCW). It could be worse but at least Hulk Hogan is still exciting to see
(welcome back Hulkster). If the WWE wants to bring back the ratings, they should
get Bret Hart to come back at least for one more fight or at least for
commentary.
Total Non-Stop Action
The following (this paragraph
only) was sent by the guys from PWE (Ontario, Canada). NWA-TNA gets a TV deal.
NWA-TNA has apparently reached a great overseas deal for television. The deal is
with "Star World" and it is rumored to include broadcast rights for Israel, Hong
Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Middle East, Philippines, Singapore, South
Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. The shows will start airing on 01.17.03,
sequentially, starting from the first shows in June. They will be broken up into
one-hour shows, so the first hour of the two-hour PPV would air on Fridays both
from 2 to 3 PM and again from 7:30-8:30 PM, and the second hour would air on
Sundays at 2 PM and 7:30 PM Considering North America is starving for an
alternative and is apparently willing to pay for it (heck, just look at the gate
that UFC 40 pulled in), a free outlet for TNA would have great odds of paying
immediate dividends for NWA-TNA.
The previous news are very
good for wrestling fans outside the US. Unfortunately those of us who live in
the US still have to pay $9.95 for each PPV (every Wednesday).
NWA-TNA had another PPV
(01.08.03), which I missed. The Road Warriors, Hennig and Jarrett were at the
Asylum (the venue where NWA-TNA broadcast from). I wish the NWA-TNA gets a TV
deal fast. I'm missing a lot of good wrestling.
Raven is now part of NWA-TNA.
He was released from the WWE on 01.22.03 and the same day he decided to crash
Jarrett's celebration (keeping the NWA-TNA world heavyweight title).
Pro-Wrestling Extreme
The following newsletter
dedicated to all things related to Ontario's Hottest Wrestling Company,
Pro-Wrestling Extreme, was sent by Chris Clarke, 01.05.03.
The Holiday Season has been
a busy planning session for the PWE. 2003 is shaping up to be a great year for
us. A lot of information has already been announced about our upcoming shows.
Please make sure to look over all the sections below, as there is something for
every taste. Hope to see you out at the shows in 2003, they are already shaping
up to be the best ones ever!
Everyone out there knows that
unlike most of the Promoters in this great Province of ours, I have never been
afraid to send out kudos to other area promotions. This is reality folks, and
what the majority of the marks out there don't understand is that storylines are
for shows. Anyhow, I wanted to focus first of all this week on the PWE debuts of
a few guys who came in from the Niagara region from the former Fighting Spirit
Pro-Wrestling. At the time, 3 of the brightest young stars of the FSPW were
Knoxx and Kincaid of Body Count, along with Los Jalapenos. With our regular
monthly shows at Brock, it made sense to bring these guys in as it was close to
home for them. Besides this, my regular communications with referee Matt Young
had sparked my interest in these guys long before, so when the time was right we
booked them. And I am happy we did.
Body Count are guys who have
worked hard at their persona's and they are easy to work with. Their matches
with Xzibit and Kronus have been solid, and in 2003 we are very interested in
seeing Knoxx and Kincaid on many more PWE events not just in the Niagara area,
but across the Province as well.
Los Jalapenos is another
product of the former FSPW (which is now defunct, with several FSPW people now
operating under the NEO Spirit banner) who has come in and worked hard and has
impressed the office. An easy going guy who is able to adapt to whatever is
presented to him, Jalapeno always seems to have his own section chanting
endlessly in Spanish during his matches. All in all, Body Count and Los
Jalapenos have been welcome additions to our roster.
With people coming in, you
always seem to have people going out as well and in the latter part of 2002 we
saw our greatest staple of all retire from the wrestling business. C-Note, who
won our Fans Choice Manager of the Year award in both 2000 and 2001, was the
glue that held things together at times and will be sorely missed.
From our first event in June
of 2000 when it was his jobeat to get some very extremely green guys over with
the crowd, he did his jobeat and then some. We put together the BayStreet Posse,
which was originally comprised of DJ Money and Solid Shawn Gold, and would soon
include Damien Truth and later, TSE. C-Note learned how to draw heat from the
crowd, and on many occasions would cause near riots as his classic exchanges
with the front row would often have fans ready to attack him. That is what being
a true heel manager is all about. After running an angle where C-Note lost
everything he had and we brought him back as a janitor, he played that off
perfectly, then as a disgusted and reluctant announcer before coming in to 2002
with The Xzibit, Jason Kronus - then adding Candi, Colin Douglas and Ricky
Stardust to the mix. C-Note's departure will definitely leave a gap in the
roster, and only time will tell if he gets the 'bug' and shows up someday,
somewhere.
C-Note was also the guy who
I credit with introducing the PWE to its greatest fan faction, the MIO (Men In
Orange). The MIO are a bunch of drunken, obnoxious, but really very cool guys
and gals from McMaster University in Hamilton. The MIO has supported the PWE and
traveled with us around the Province, and we have mentioned them numerous times
that we had nights where without them we wouldn't have had much of a crowd at
all. I can remember Oakville Ontario, when the venue screwed up the advertisements
and we ended up with maybe 65 to 70 fans, that one section on the hard camera
side was MIO. They made it looked packed and they made enough noise for a packed
house. Even when the houses are big or bigger, they stand out and we appreciate
these guys and gals who have made doing shows fun. They know how to have a good
time, and we are honored that they quite often choose our events to have fun at.
Announcer Al Case, wrestler-trainee Axl Row and valet Candi are all MIO people.
2002 also saw PWE Academy
trainee referee Dave Dread win an Ontario Fan Poll as 2002 Referee of the Year.
Dave has worked with several different federations now and continues to get
better every time out as he reaches for the goal of one day refereeing in the
WWE. Huegobos made his return as a live commentator and seems to have lost
nothing of the sharp tongue that has endeared him to fans and those who need to
get over.
And in the midst of it all, I
look back at all those who have moved on. Some I am ecstatic over their leaving,
some I don't care others, for whatever reason, I really do miss, but that's the
business right?
Lord knows what 2003 will
bring. (Chris Drury, 12.30.02)
On 01.12.02, PWE's first
show of the year at the Appleby Mall in Burlington Ontario. Marks the
professional wrestling debuts of Bobby Thunder, (as Avenger 6.6) Jason Kronus

is now known as Phil Latio, as well as the PWE debuts of Bobby Rude and The
Xzibit.
On 01.19.02, Flesh Gordon

before Notorious T.I.D. announces Fabian stokes has officially left a promotion
in Toronto and will battle Flesh later in the card. PWE Cruiserweight Champion
'Sexy Baby' Jamie Jackson defeats 'Bloody' Bill Skullion for the PWE Heavyweight
Title making him the first ever dual title holder in PWE. C-Note announces a

beaten by Original Sinn. Also marks the first ever match together as a team for
Xzibit and Kronus - who defeat Stardust and Mikey Madrox.
03.16.02, on a show that
received worldwide thumbs up reviews, Notorious T.I.D. defeats 'Sexy Baby' Jamie
Jackson for the PWE Title. 'Bloody' Bill Skullion and Phil Latio put on one of
the best matches in PWE history as after the match the several hundred in
attendance chant "Respect, Respect" as a bloodied and beaten Phil Latio made his
way from the ring area.
04.05.02, Badd Boy Batty Batt
makes his PWE debut, as does Gorilla Jones who comes down and knocks out
Stardust and Batty during their match. Rawhide makes his PWE debut, and Custom
Made Man defeats Jamie Jackson for the Canadian Cruiserweight Title.
05.04.02, Colin Douglas
officially comes out of retirement and returns to action, first leading the
crowd in a tribute and ten bell salute to the recently departed Lou Thesz, then
defeating TJ Harley as part of the "King of the Lethal Lottery" tournament. The
Mongol also suffers severe burns when he is hit in the face with a fireball
thrown by Bill Skullion, who then knocks out Badd Boy Batty Batt with several
chair shots. Jamie Jackson also regains the cruiserweight title from Custom Made
Man.
05.25.02, former PWE champion
Mike Vantastic returns to the ring and defeats Promoter Chris Drury in a match
that left Drury requiring 7 stitches. Notorious T.I.D. defends the PWE Title
against Xzibit, marking his third successful title defence.
07.06.02, PWE features its
first ever ladder match as Custom Made Man and Jamie Jackson battle for the
cruiserweight Title. Custom defeats Jamie in an excellent match. In a PWE Tag
Team Title Tournament match, Marco Malaquias, due to Jason Breeze being unable
to a last minute work assignment, defeats Xzibit and Kronus alone to advance in
the tournament.
07.13.02, Phil Latio wins a
Toronto Tornado match against Otto Bahn, Custom Made Man and Marco Malaquias to
become new Cruiserweight Champion. Rawhide and The Brown Hornet team up to face
Bobby Thunder and Colin Douglas, and rookie Jason Kronus bodyslams JC Owens to
defeat him in a 'bodyslam challenge' match.
07.27.02, "Bloody"
Bill Skullion and Mike VanTastic take part in the first ever "Russian
Roullette" staple gun match. Bill attacks VanTastic with the loaded gun and
staples his picture into VanTastics forehead with one of the staples embedding
in VanTastics skull and requiring emergency hospital treatment to remove. T.I.D.
defends the PWE Title against Xzibit again, and the tow have a great match that
Tid is able to gain the upper hand in and win.
08.10.02, Billy Boogie makes
his PWE debut. US Champion 'Nitestic' Eddie Brown and Delicious Dino take part
in a three-way match with Colin Douglas for the US Title. With assistance from
C-Note, Douglas wins the title by pinning Dino. Marco Malaquias, again without
Jason Breeze, gets set to face JC Owens and Mikey Madrox for the final match in
the PWE Tag Title tournament. Marco faces forfeiture, when Gorilla Jones comes
down and teams up with Marco to defeat Madrox and Owens to become first ever PWE
Tag Champs. Also, Custom and Jamie take part in the first ever PWE Tables,
Ladders, and Chairs match. The match is thrown out after outside interference
from the Consortium.
09.06.02, Pimp Dady Flexx,
Lazz, Los Jalapenos and Body Count all make their PWE debuts. ECW Queen of
Extreme Francine makes her PWE debut as special guest referee as Notorious
T.I.D. defeats JC Owens, Custom Made Man and Jamie Jackson in a four-way for the
PWE Title.
09.25.02, C-Note forces the
Championship Committee to strip Marco Malaquias and Gorilla Jones of the PWE
titles due to "non-defence" rules. He (C-Note) then forces the Committee to
allow the Consortium to take the PWE Titles to North Carolina to defend against
the Danger Zone Wrestling Tag Champions to unify the belts. Xzibit and Kronus
lose to 'Nitestic' Eddie Brown and DJ P-Rokk, therefore losing the PWE Tag
Titles without actually first winning them on 09.27.02 in Carthage, North
Carolina.
09.26 and 09.27.02, Colin
Douglas loses the US Title to Ali Steele on September 26th, and defeats Steele
to regain the Title the very next night in Carthage North Carolina.
10.04.02, Ash and Chris
Chambers make their first ever PWE match appearances. The Original Sinn returns
to the PWE ranks and defeats The Brown Hornet.
10.06.02, The Brown Hornet
defeats the 400-plus-pound JC Owens, and Season of the Sick are declared winners
of a Tag Team Tables match against Xzibit and Kronus.
10.30.02, After leading Colin
Douglas, and Xzibit and Kronus, to PWE Title reigns and after being voted
Manager of the Year in both 2000 and 2001, original PWE performer C-Note retires
from wrestling.
10.31.02, Marco Malaquias
teams up with Otto Bahn to defeat Season of the Sick in a Barbed Wire Tables
match, and Phil Latio defends the PWE Cruiserweight Title against Jamie Jackson
in a match that those in attendance claim may be "the greatest (they have) ever
witnessed live".
11.22.02, Three titles change
hands as Custom Made Man defeats Colin Douglas for the US Title, Brown Hornet
defeats cruiserweight champion Phil Latio and returning former cruiserweight
champion Kidd Krazzy to become new Canadian Cruiserweight Champion, and Xzibit
and Kronus defeat 'Nitestic' Eddie Brown and DJ P-Rokk to become PWE Tag Champs.
The 6'3", 350-pound monster Michael makes his PWE debut and after being
disqualified in a handicap match against Season of The Sick and interferes in
Notorious T.I.D.'s title match against Marco Malaquias leading to a dressing
room clearing brawl.

Other: Mixed Martial Arts
The following was sent by
PWE (Ontario, Canada). Perhaps this is also a sign of the times, as MMA (Mixed
Martial Arts) is becoming more popular by the month. Already, segments such as
"The Tale of the Tape" have been appearing on WWE television
programming, along with an emphasis on submission wrestling. It will be an
interesting year, as perhaps a new type of "wrestling war" has
started.
