"Ravishing" Rick Rude (1958 to 1999)
First thing to be done is mourn
the death of a great wrestler. "Ravishing" Rick Rude (real spelling Rood) died
in his home (12.07.58 - 04.20.99) of a heart attack. This section is to
celebrate the life of one of the best wrestlers of the 80's and early 90's.
He started in Texas in World
Class Championship Wrestling where he got the American heavyweight title. He
stayed in the promotion until 1986.
He entered World Wrestling
Federation in 1987. He got the Intercontinental Champion (04.89 to 08.89) from
the Ultimate Warrior, with whom he feuded. His best feud was with Jake
"the Snake" Roberts over his wife.
Right before World
Championship Wrestling separated from the National Wrestling Association in
1991, he became the NWA heavyweight Champion. After WCW left the NWA, the title
became WCW heavyweight Champion. He feuded with Ric Flair.
Later (date unknown) in
Japan he hurt his neck, retiring from the ring, not from the sport.
From 1997 to 1998 he was in
ECW the best Commentator and manager of the Triple Threat. He feuded with Shane
Douglas after helping Bam Bam Bigelow become the heavyweight champion. During
this time he was in the WWF as the Insurance Provider for D-Generation X.
The last year of his life
he returned to WCW as manager, best friend of Curt Hennig and commentator. He
feuded with everybody outside the New World Order.
ECW had a very touching
tribute to Rick Rude that I
was lucky to witness and that was never aired.
World Wrestling Federation
Stone "Cold Steve"
Austin regained the world title from Rocky (Wrestlemania XV). Now that he has
the title, he only has to get his belt back. He has to fight Rocky again for the
Smokin' Skull belt on the next PPV. One think that makes no sense in the Austin
and McMahon feud is that Shane McMahon's wife is Austin's personal relations
agent.
Golddust won the
Intercontinental Championship again by defeating Val Venis on Wrestlemania XV.
Golddust lost the title (04.12.99) to the Godfather, known before as Kama
Mustafa (around 1995).
X-Pac (Sixx Pac, 1-2-3
Kidd, whatever) and Kane won the tag team belts (04.05.99). How did these two
manage to get along for those ten magic minutes? Can they hold to the belts? I
doubt it.
Speaking of belts, Shane
McMahon retired the European Championship belt. Shane also slapped his father
(04.12.99) taking control of the Corporation.
Does anyone remember
Doink The Clown? He was in
the WWF around 1994-95 and feuded with Jerry Lawler. He now does his trade at
Allied Powers Wrestling Federation (APWF) where the slogan is "The legends of
yesterday, the champions of today, the stars of tomorrow".
Late gossip indicates that
both Dan "The Beast" Savern and 2 Cold Scorpio are no longer under Titan
contract.
World Championship Wrestling
Lately Ric Flair has been
acting like Eric Bischoff, same bad attitude. Because Flair is the new WCW
president, he is bossy pushing everybody around insulting those who pay to see
the promotion. Flair was even locked in a Florida mental asylum. This series of
events is making Hollywood Hulk Hogan look good for a change. With Sting back in
his white makeup like the Crow they were part of a four-corner match for the
heavyweight title with Diamond Dallas Page, on Spring Stampede. The new
heavyweight world champion is Dallas Page (at last), who will face Kevin Nash on
the next Slamboree PPV.
Phychosis won the cruiser
weight belt from Kidman 04.19.99 but Kidman won it again on 04.26.99 on Nitro.
Sting won the world title
from Dallas Page on 04.26.99 in the middle of Nitro but lost it at the end. Page
is the world champion again (!?) beating Sting, Kevin Nash and Bill Goldberg in
a four-corner match.
Stevie Ray is now the leader
(04.05.99) of the black and white NWO after defeating the other members.
Speaking of Harlem Heat, Booker T is the new TV Champion.
One of the two best fights
of Nitro 04.12.99 was Dallas Page's title defense. The other one was Bam Bam
Bigelow (one of all time favorite wrestlers) in a bamboo stick fight with Hugh
Morris. The Beast from the East is one of the best hardcore fighters, besides
the rest of the original Triple Threat of ECW (1997-98). In the background the
announcement was that WCW could make a new title, a hardcore or extreme title.
WCW is copying the WWF. Hopefully it would better than the WWF's version of a
hardcore title belt, not a piece of torn metal with duct tape. Bam Bam Bigelow
calls himself the King of Hardcore and will fight one of the Nasty Boys on
Slamboree.
Back in
February, I
was wondering about the British Bulldog. At last I got some information. He is
suffering a spinal infection as a result of an injury. He will sue WCW because
he had been terminated (cheaply fired). That might be the fate of Jim Neidhart.
Now I understand why Bret Hart quit the promotion. What is next for the Hart
Foundation, the WWF?
The whole WCW/NWO is very
silly and somewhat of a waste of time. When will WCW accept they cut the checks
for the members of NWO? In other WCW news (starting 04.05.99) Nitro has a new
look. It was about time that WCW would do such a huge change. It has a new
entrance with the new logo. The new logo is also found on the newer videos to be
released on June and later. One of them is Kevin Nash of The Outsiders, which
will be marketed by Warner Home Video
(06.01.99). The video is great with footage when Kevin Nash has won the tag team
belts with Scott Hall and the heavyweight belt.
Extreme Championship Wrestling
The first show of ECW of
April was 50% fun. About twenty minutes were wasted with some wrestlers yapping.
There was only two short matches. Tommy Dreamer beat Lance Storm with help from
Francine, who kicked the back of Storm's head. How can a girl kick so high with
a skirt? There was a cat-fight between Francine and Dawn Marie.
The second match was
interrupted between Jerry Lynn and Smothers by Rob Van Dam. Little Guido came to
the ring to fight his former tag team partner. The show ended with Jerry Lynn
and RVD facing each other as if they were going to fight.
The second show (NYC aired
on 04.10.99 Cyberslam 99) was much better, little yapping and no bullshit. The
first match had Rob Van Dam celebrating his first year anniversary as the world
TV champion with a match against 2 Cold Scorpio. Thanks to Sabu, Scorpio
couldn't win. RVD shook Scorpio's hand after the match recognizing his effort.
Second match meant the
return of Tammy Lynn Sytch (barely clad) and Chris Candido (still sporting the
Triple Threat tattoo on his left arm) who went for Taz' world title. Candido
claimed that he would never tap for Taz. Neither a chain nor a table helped
Candido. Taz put Candido through the table. As Candido was being taken out in a
stretcher and a neck brace, Taz attacked him again. Candido got hurt and people
still cheered for Taz because Candido tapped for mercy.
On the third ECW aired on
of this month, the promotion claimed that State Officials confiscated some of
their tapes because the tapes were too graphical. Only part of the showed was
aired with some still frames. The fight in which the Dudleys won the title was
after all. It was a great fight.
On
04.24.99, I saw ECW live at Elk's Lodge in Queens, NY. It started a half hour
late (8:30 to 11:20pm) with all wrestlers in the ring to pay tribute to
"Ravishing" Rick Rude. The bell sounded 10 times. Everybody was sad
and showed respect (no hats and quiet) to the late Rick Rude except one stupid
kid. Later in show the Dudleys (tag champions again) cursed the shit out this
kid and his mother. Paul E. Dangerously gave them twice their money back and had
them removed by security out of the building. The last part may not be shown on
TV.
One highlight of the show
had Chris Candido acting like he was almost paralyzed with a broken neck from
Taz' attack at Cyberslam '99. Candido asked Taz to come out of to the ring area
asking for an apology. Taz said that in New York no one shows respect and to
everyone's surprise Candido attacked Taz. Steve Corino and Tammy Lynn Synch
helped leaving Taz almost unconscious. After the assault Taz decided to put the
title on the line at Hardcore Heaven on May 16, 1999.
A huge surprise was the
reaction to Skull Von Krush. Most of the audience liked him as a local hero,
chanting "Skull-berg."
Another highlight was a
fight between Tommy Dreamer and Lance Storm. Both Dawn Marie and Francine were
at ringside wearing very small outfits. As usual there was a cat-fight. Justin
Credible came out to join the fight against Dreamer. Douglas came out to help
Dreamer and Francine. The fight ended with a cinder block being placed on
Dreamer's genitalia and being hit with a stick. Douglas, Dreamer and Francine
had to receive medical attention.
The night closed with Rob
Van Dam and Bubba Dudley for the TV belt. RVD got the pin keeping the title.
At a mere ten feet from the
ring, it was the best live show that I have ever seen. The exception would be
some concerts of course (KMFDM
on October 1995, Ozzfest '97
at Giants Stadium, Depeche Mode
on October 1998 at MSG). It was much better than the WWF at MSG on March 1997.
