World Wrestling Federation
HHH returned to action
(02.01.99) against Kane no less, in a cage match, which he won courtesy of
X-Pac. Didn't he lose on RAW an "I quit" match against Rocky? If he is really
out,
what would be his next stop WCW or ECW? I don't think the WWF would afford to
lose him as a wrestler.
Mankind got the world
champion again. It didn't surprise me. The WWF had to make the Super Bowl half
time USA Network
exiting. Unfortunately Mankind lost the title to Rocky (RAW, 02.16.99), courtesy
of Paul Wight (known as the Giant in WCW).
Paul Wight is part of WWF
now. He disappears from the spotlight for barely two weeks and reappeared in the
WWF site. What is he going to do in the WWF? He was a WCW favorite, who was
losing his momentum in the hands of Kevin Nash. His first appearance in WWF was
at the Valentine's Day Massacre PPV as part of the McMahon Corporation. He will
the special referee in Steve Austin's bout for the WWF title against Rocky.
I stated at some point that
no one wants to be champion of the promotion he owns. Shane McMahon beat X-Pac
with help from Chyna for the European Champion. He is going to WrestleMania XV
to defend his title.
It would be a thrill if the
Undertaker had a title shot. By the way what is the Undertaker doing lately? As
I mentioned, the
vampire persona some wrestlers have. The Brood joined forces with the
Undertaker's cartoon-like show (02.01.99). This is really silly. The Undertaker
should start beating people up, not making a fool of himself. The wrestlers in
his Ministry of Darkness have changed names. A good example of this is Mable who
is now called Viscera.
The Road Dogg was forced to
surrender the belt (aired on 02.13.99) because of a knee injury as stated by
the WWF. Sources indicate that the Road Dogg was fired of the WWF for
questionable behavior, not his knee. A champion was decided in a bout at
Valentine's Day Massacre between Al Snow and Bob Holy who of course won the
Hardcore Championship (02.14.99).
What would be the next stop
for the Road Dogg? He might go to WCW where his brothers, the Armstrongs, do a
living. He might continue the hardcore act at ECW. No one knows yet, though.
Koch Records re-issued the
Wrestling Album making it the fourth release with the label; the album was
originally released by Sony in 1985. If the formula works, don't change it. That
is exactly what the WWF is doing in music. The only silly part is that the album
was recorded by wrestlers and staff who left WWF and now are either part of WCW
or some smaller promotions. The smart part of it is that it features Jesse "the
Body" Ventura who didn't sing on the album though. The WWF must want to cash a
little more from him.
Beast Records just released
Slammin' Wrestling. The album has opening themes of WWF and WCW. The album has
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Goldberg together. This last collection is the
only one with WCW music, aside from the Hulk Hogan CD.
World Championship Wrestling
A question for everyone, if
Hogan is not forced to defend his belt, when would he? Even though Rick Flair is
not one of the favorite wrestlers, I wish that he could beat Hogan silly. Anyone
but Hogan should have that title. Besides no one would mind seeing Flair as the
champion and the president of WCW. Where do we leave the confusing and
misleading reality of Flair being the president of WCW? Eric Bishoff is still an
active executive, according to the credits of the PPV events.
Rowdy Piper won the US
Heavyweight Championship (02.08.99) from Bret Hart. Does anyone know many titles
Piper has had? If I am not wrong, this is his first title ever.
Last month,
I asked what WCW did to the tag champions. WCW TV programming has been exiting
with this double elimination tournament thanks to Flair. To keep WCW/NWO on a
nice balance, the Outsiders should should have won the tag team championship.
Perhaps the British Bulldog and Jim "the Anvil" Neidhart could have done very
well if they were active part of WCW on Nitro. By the way where are the British
Bulldog and Jim Neidhart? The winners and new tag team champions are Barry
Windham and Curt Hennig (02.21.99) defeating Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit in
the last match of the tournament at Super Brawl.
Speaking of lost wrestlers
where is the Ultimate Warrior or simply Warrior as he is called in WCW? His
website has a link to a wrestling school under his name.
Speaking of more lost
wrestlers, the Sandman is back. He left ECW for WCW when his contract expired
late last year. Where has he been? Since his name means ECW, he might not be
able to use it. What is he going to call himself? The only sure thing is that
he brought his barbwire and this means that WCW has gone extreme, or at least
partially.
Talking about extreme
wrestling, WCW is just following what the WWF started. If extreme wrestling
attracts people, jump on the bandwagon. Read the comments
on the hardcore (extreme) title held by the Road Dogg until the Valentine's Day
Massacre PPV.
Because TBS
is watched in cable worldwide, WCW has become really a world promotion and not
just a promotion with a catchy name, since its introduction of in the early
90's. Some promoters use the word world but are as local as public access
channels.
What is wrong with
TNT airing the
re-run of Nitro one week at 3:00 and another week at 2:00 in the morning (its
regular time)? Don't they know people like me sleep at that time? Please keep
your schedule or tell us when to record it.
Extreme Championship Wrestling
As I
mentioned,
Taz is the new ECW champion. As a champion ECW calls him a miserable man. He
delivered a previously recorded speech interview saying that any champion in the
WWF was not good enough to get the belt away from him. Later in February in
Detroit he issued a challenge to "any champion in WCW or the WWF" for the ECW
World Championship (01.23.99 aired in early February of course). Such challenge
can be respected by any wrestler and promotion. Perhaps WCW would not care.
Perhaps the WWF would pay attention. Perhaps if any champion of either promotion
would dare to fight Taz outside his promotion's standards, there could be
something we as fans must see. I guess that any wrestler would be proud to say
that he went to ECW and brought the belt back with him. If anyone in a suit can
make this happen, please do so on free TV or a PPV so we can all watch it.
Still one of the favorite
ECW wrestlers is Shane Douglas. He proved that he was a great champion when he
had a return bout for the title on 01.16.99. Even though he lost the fight, he
got an ovation from the audience at the ECW Arena after being applauded by Taz
himself. Douglas later (02.12.99) retired from wrestling thanking Taz for a
great last fight and giving his spot as the Franchise to Tommy Dreamer. In the
middle of a somewhat emotional goodbye, he was interrupted and assaulted by
Justin Credible and Lance Storm who even hit Francine on the face drawing blood
out of her mouth with the bamboo stick that Justin stole months ago from the
Sandman. ECW has gone too far, or at least some of its goons have. This or
Belulah's broken neck should never have happened.
Late last month Sid became part
of ECW. He came out of the retirement and perhaps he could stay in the promotion
longer than usual. Sid could go for the world title against Taz. The
introduction of Sid was very smart from ECW. It could give global recognition to
ECW, from an east coast wrestling promotion with PPV access to international
status.
I don't know how Sabu got the
unrecognized FTW (Fuck The World) title from Taz. It must have happened during
the five months that NYC had no ECW (08.98 to 01.99). Where is FTW from though?
Is it a real promotion or simply a gimmick? Now ECW says that Sabu and Taz will
go for the ECW title to unify (?) both belts.
Last month,
I pointed out that the quality of ECW's Extreme Music is simply outstanding.
Surprisingly sales have not been very good with the album yet. ECW can brag
about the album being part of the BMG catalog, a major distributor. The album
might not be distributed worldwide.

Gladiators Wrestling Alliance
Last month,
I mentioned the GWA which meant Global Wrestling Alliance. There is another
promotion named GWA which stands for Gladiators Wrestling Alliance, which hosts
a site for the NWF or the National Wrestling Federation. Gary, the President of
Vangar.com (dead site) which hosts the GWA and NWF sites, explained the
coincidence of the names.
"About two years
ago we were called the Global Wrestling Alliance but it was brought to our
attention by ex-pro-wrestler Bill Hughes in Long Beach, CA that Global Wrestling
Alliance by the original group that started that name so we changed to the
current Gladiators Wrestling Alliance and [we] no longer have anything to do
with the old name." (02.14.99 - thanks Gary)
Ultimate Fighting Championship
It is a pity that NYC gets
very limited wrestling or UFC exposure when this city is still very violent and
dangerous. The UFC might still be banned from this state and no PPV events are
carried on cable. The WWF comes to the Madison Square Garden. ECW comes to their
home in NYC, Elks Lodge in Queens. WCW comes as close as Nassau Coliseum or the
Meadowlands Arena, two hours away by car. The UCW barely comes to NYC. The UCW
has come probably twice to Elks Lodge in the past two years.
APWF
The following was sent by
APWF. On 02.19.99 at Punxsutawney, PA, Romeo Valentino defeated Adam Flash with
Royce Profit. Later Major Agony defeated Bob Keller. The "Latin Dragon" Julio
Sanchez defeated Cueball Carmichael with Royce Profit having to fight
interference by Cecero and Profit. Fang defeated Jeff Pearce hitting a Juvi
driver to the floor. "Sexy" Shane Shadows defeated G-Moe in a ladder match. Bad
Bubba Brewer defeated Sheik Abdul Hussein, keeping the APWF heavyweight title.
Black Cat defeated Bad Bubba Bubba for the APWF heavyweight title. Jimmy Cicero
with Profit and Carmichael defeated Tom Brandi with Jade by disqualification.
The Bushwackers defeated House of Kane (Mohammed Kane and Combat Kid with Spike
Callan) for the tag team championship.
Other Promotions
Send me information of
wrestling sites and promotions. If you know what AAA (Triple A) mean,
let me know.
I haven't heard of some
smaller promotions as RWA or IUWA or NWC for example. Through search engines I
found some promotions that I never heard before and some specialized sites. See
the links.
Visit them and support the underdogs. If you have links that I should include,
send them.
Other News - Backyard Wrestling
According to the news, kids
have gone sort of crazy lately practicing what they call backyard brawls. Kids
are allegedly wrestling in their backyards very extremely. I guess that the
newscasters were trying to blame ECW for having gone more violent than other
promotions. These kids on the news were beating the crap out of each other
jumping from roof tops and slamming themselves into tables lit on fire. It is
crazy doing this shit if one is not trained well. This is a great excuse to
break one's neck and no one would care about it.
A good example is what
happened to me when practicing some wrestling in high school around 1988 (not
Greco-Roman though). When a friend of mine had me on a torture rack, I moved to
free myself thinking that I would land on the feet. I landed on the side of my
hip on a 30 to 45-inch thick concrete floor. I was on therapy for six weeks
taking heavy medication. The doctor told me that I had developed an eczema and,
if not treated right away, it could reappear in the brain killing me. the point
is, if you are not trained on how to take falls, don't put yourself falling to
or through anything. You are better off training at any wrestling school.
